NSF Awards $1.2M Grant to Pave the Way for Computer Science Education in Louisiana

The National Science Foundation recently awarded Louisiana Tech University a $1.2 million Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program grant to foster computer science education in north Louisiana.

Computing occupations are the No. 1 source of all new wages in the United States and make up over half of all projected new jobs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Louisiana currently has almost 2,500 open computing jobs. Yet in Louisiana, only 16 percent of all public high schools teach computer science, and 70 percent of the teachers of those courses are not certified to teach computer science.

A Talent for Teaching: UTeach Reveals a Career Pathway for STEM Majors | WorkingNation

TeachTech is a collaborative initiative of the College of Education, Louisiana Tech University College of Engineering and Science, and the College of Applied and Natural Sciences. STEM students can earn a minor in secondary education and obtain their teaching certification while working toward completion of their degree in a STEM-related field.

"Through the UTeach program, students are able to take advantage of two different paths to a career.”
Dr. Laura Bostick, associate director for UTeachTech

For Those Who Want to Teach: UTeach

Does UTeach train great teachers? Research says yes!  One study found that, compared to traditionally trained teachers, UTeach graduates "...produce as much as four months of additional learning in math and nearly six months of additional learning in science. For high school algebra and biology, the difference in student outcomes for UTeach and non-UTeach teachers is larger than the difference in outcomes between new teachers and what we typically see after a teacher has ten years of experience!"
